Before you choose your next hair care product , take a really good look at your hair and how it is doing. If you pay close attention, the signs will tell you the type of care it needs. This will help you to choose the right shampoo and conditioner.
But what kinds of signs do you need to look for? Hair comes in very diverse expression. There are a few things that will help you along the way that are easy to spot. First look at if your hair is straight, wavy or curly. Then notice if it is fine or thick. The next thing you should note down is how much hair you have, meaning how abundant or sparse the hair is.
Knowing your skin type will also help you determine how greasy your scalp is. This is important to know to determine what would be the optimal washing schedule for you. The dryer your skin type is, the less sebum it is producing daily. This affects how fast your hair becomes greasy, and how many days you might skip between washes.
The last thing you need to write down is what treatments your have done to your hair. Make a note if you have coloured your hair, and how big of a difference is between your original colour and dyed hair colour is. Have you had a perm or hair straightening treatment?
Did you know?
If you have fine hair and are looking for volume, the trick is to use less conditioner. Conditioner makes the hair very slick and smooth, and with fine hair that is not the problem. Fine hair needs a bit more grip in the hair itself to have more volume and lift in the root. High levels of conditioning agents also make the hair heavier and flattens fine hair.
Curly
Hair Needs- To have very well defined curls, you are most probably using a lot of styling products to keep the curls bundled up and looking great. In this case, the hair needs a shampoo that cleans all the styling products thoroughly.
- If the hair is not cleansed properly, it will become dull and heavy and loses the ability to form those bouncy curls. Curly hair needs a good amount of moisture to keep the curls from straightening.
Treated
Hair Needs- Treated hair, be it coloured, perm or straightening treatment, is structurally damaged.
- This is why treated hair needs a great conditioner that helps to detangle wet, damaged hair effortlessly, it also helps the hair to be soft to touch.
- Treated hair also loses moisture easily, so a moisturising hair mask treatment once a week is recommended.
Greasy
Hair Needs- Greasy hair needs both a good cleanser and a great lightweight conditioner. It’s also important that the shampoo is applied and massaged to the scalp, where most of the cleansing action is needed.
- Shampoo will get rid of the built up sebum and makes the hair light and voluminous.
- A good lightweight conditioner will keep longer hair properly nourished and moisturised.
What’s the Purpose of Shampoo?
To keep our hair clean is one of our basic needs. Humans have used different cleaning methods for their hair since the dawn of time. In modern times, the shampoos help to remove sebum and dead skin cells from the scalp and reduce hair greasiness. Shampoos also help to remove dirt particles and hair styling and conditioning agents from the hair itself.
Before 1920s soap was the most common washing agent for washing hair. Women would, avoid using soap, as it made the hair dry and tangled. Depending on the water type (hard water) soap would also leave waxy deposits in the hair.
Thanks to modern science, there are many types of shampoos to choose from: shampoo, dry shampoo, cleansing conditioners and shampoo bars.
Does My Hair Need a Conditioner?
The short answer lies in how you answer this question: Does your hair get tangled? If you have virgin hair, no structural or colour changes to your hair, you might not need a conditioner. But if your hair gets tangled, it will benefit from a conditioner.
Detangling hair without a conditioner causes mechanical damage to the hair, and makes it more susceptible to breakage and split ends.
The other reason you might need a conditioner, even if your hair does not get tangled, is to control hair static and flyaways. Your hair often gets static electricity during dry winter months.
